The Khanates of the Caucasus region were semi-autonomous administrative regions set up under the Safavid Shahs in the 17th century. They remained under Iranian control until the early Qajar era when most of their territory was annexed by Russia.
Being under the control of successive Iranian dynasties, Classical Caucasian carpet designs are for the most part inspired by, but in no way derivative of, Classical Iranian designs. For example, many so called 'Caucasian Blossom' carpets prominently feature Shah Abbasi floral designs rendered in a more geometric, bold fashion than the carpets they are inspired by.
